The Story of My Tattoo and My Tips on Getting Inked!

It’s only his outside; a man can be honest in any sort of skin.
---Herman Melville (Moby Dick)

Tattoos can be a controversial topic but I personally am a huge fan when they are done well. Right now I only have one but I'm looking into getting another. Lindsey showed me this blog post (click here!) that is about getting a tattoo and never regretting it. It has some great information so if you're thinking about getting a one I would definitely recommend checking it out. I wanted to write a little bit though about what I went through before I got inked.

Here's a picture from the day I got my tattoo, a little over a year ago. It says 'bella fiore' and it means beautiful flower in Italian.

Tattoos are not something to take lightly. I would never recommend getting one unless you have thought long and hard about it. I started planning my tattoo when I was 16 shortly after my grandpa passed away and didn't end up getting it until a few days before my 20th birthday. Originally I wanted to get a rose on my wrist. I started looking into different pictures of roses on the internet to figure out what exactly I wanted. There's a lot of different aspects you have to think about when planning a tattoo; placement, size, color, image, cost, etc. One thing that I did that I highly recommend is to get a Henna Tattoo of something similar to what you want and where you want it. I did this around 17 and it helped me realize that I did't want something permanently on my wrist. It also helped me realize that I didn't want an image anymore, but rather words. Then I sort of put the whole tattoo idea on the back burner and started college. After two years I realized that I still did want a tattoo so that is when I started thinking about it again. I decided pretty quickly that I wanted the words 'bella fiore' on my collarbone to represent both of my grandparents who I grew up very close to, but lost far too early. I miss them a lot and I wanted something there to remind me of them and the time that I spent with them. A lot of people have opinions about getting tattoos in memory of someone because they think that you don't have to get one to prove how much they meant to you, but I disagree with this obviously. I think that as long as the tattoo has great significance to you, you'll never regret it. So take your time and make sure you really love it and that it's perfect. Also don't be afraid to speak up if you don't like the way the stencil is drawn or where it is placed before they start. It's your body and you're paying for it. Therefore you have full entitlement to be picky. I had my tattoo artist move it around at least five times before he started inking me. So take your time and come up with something beautiful. You only live once so if you want a tattoo, get it. Just make sure you are smart about it! Oh and don't forget to head over to the link I put at the beginning for some extra information.

About a week ago, we took a little trip to the park right around my apartment and took some pictures on the swings, merry-go-round and more. While it was a little awkward at first, taking pictures on the playground while kids around us were playing, it ended up being a fun afternoon. We got asked if we were twins which was pretty funny. At a time when we're starting to become completely independent adults, it's nice to be able to take a break from responsibilities and play like a child. Below are some of the pictures we took.
Have a great Tuesday! Go check something off your bucket list!

Andrea's July Fashion Picks

Andrea's July Fashion Picks

1) My camel-colored cross body bag is used almost every day. Whether I'm on my way to work or going out at night, it matches almost every outfit.
2) I have some mock-wayfarers that are much more neon pink than this pair, but they are the perfect way to add a pop of color to a normally neutral outfit on a sunny day!
3) The clothing I have been wearing recently has been rather neutral and bohemian. This lace vest is a great piece to give you that boho feel.
4) I'm loving my bangles this month. I feel naked if I don't have something on my wrists and I've definitely been gravitating towards bangles recently. While these Kate Spade ones are completely out of my price range, a quick trip over to Forever 21 could easily get you a similar pair.
5) I have been living in my TOMS all summer long. Ok scratch that. I've been living in my TOMS since I received them last Christmas. If there's ever been an item that screamed me, it would definitely be these. Mine are olive green, match almost any outfit, are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned, and let's face it; how can you not love wearing them when you know a little kiddie somewhere in the world is running around in shoes because of you!
6) My boyfriend shorts were a steal from Forever 21 for under $20 and they are perfect for this 90 plus degree weather that's invaded Michigan recently.
7) Since I incorporate bows into a lot of my outfits, these studs are great because I can get my bow fix without looking like a little kid. I'm not really one to wear plain old studs so my ears have become quite friendly with bows, flowers, and more in the past months.
8) This hot weather has definitely impeded on me doing my hair in the morning, so most of the time I throw it up in a top knot bun. I have a huge headband collection, but I've been using my braided stretch headbands because they've matched the bohemian theme I seem to have going on.

What are your favorite fashion picks this month?

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

"The answer is good things only happen to you if you're good. Good? Honest is more what I mean... Be anything but a coward, a pretender, an emotional crook, a whore: I'd rather have cancer than a dishonest heart."
— Truman Capote (Breakfast at Tiffany's)

Happy Sunday! This morning Lindsey and I are going to try out a buffet at a local restaurant. My mom tells me that it's the same place that my grandma and grandpa went on their first date, so I'm excited to spend some time there. Plus, what could possibly go wrong when you're surrounded by pancakes, bacon, and a little blog planning? I leave you with a delicious picture of my best friend and a hope that you have a fantastic week. Come back and visit why don't ya?

UPDATE:
Below is a picture of our table after we stuffed ourselves silly with biscuits, bacon, pancakes and more. I think we did a pretty good job, don't you? If you live anywhere near Michigan State, I highly recommend that you visit Coral Gables. Your pockets may be a little bit less full but your tummy sure won't be complaining.  :)

Lindsey's July Beauty Picks

Lindsey's July Beauty Picks

July already! Half way through the summer but there is still lots of time to enjoy the weather and the break from real life. I have put together a few items I love and a few wish list items. Enjoy!

1) Delicious smelling body wash: Any brand will do. When you finally get a chance to take a cool shower after a humid day nothing is better than a refreshing and yummy smelling body wash.
2) Wide tooth comb: After your shower use a wide tooth comb to smooth out your tangles and keep from damaging your hair with a harsh brush.
3) Bronzer: I put bronzer on my June picks too but I mean its summer so I think its fair to include some bronze in July picks as well. This one is a bit pricey but it is my HG bronzer. I love it year round. E.L.F brand that is sold at Target has a pretty good dupe for a fraction of the price.
4) Lola: Confession: I don't actually own this but it is on my wish list. I lust over the bottle and smell every time I come across it.
5) SPF: If you don't want to be leathery and old looking at age 30 pile on the sunscreen ladies. I know you have heard it thousands of times but it is true. You will thank yourself in ten years.
6) Fun makeup bag: Well you are going to need a summery bag to keep all your summer beauty supplies. This Marc Jacobs one is a little out of my price range but a girl can dream right?
7) Fake lashes: If you know me you know I love some falsies in my life. They are so fun for a night out and little extra va-va-voom. Any brand will do. Watch some youtube tutorials on how to apply them and you'll be a pro in no time!
8) Primer Potion: If you have been keeping up with LALALand you know the importance of using an eye shadow primer especially in the heat of the summer. Urban Decay makes the best one in my opinion.

Andrea's July Beauty Picks

I can't believe it's already been a month since we posted our picks for June. Here we are with some of our favorites for July!
July Beauty Picks

Andrea's Picks: As you can tell all of my picks for July are rather neutral. So far the month of July has been extremely hot so I've been trying to wear minimal makeup to combat that gross 'melt off your face' feeling you can sometimes get during this warm weather if you wear too much makeup.
1) Matte Bronzer - I don't need any extra shimmer with these 90 degree days so a matte bronzer is a must!
2) Cream or Mousse Blushes - This one from Maybelline is my favorite because of the Mousse texture. It feels better on my skin than a powder on hot days.
3) DKNY Be Delicious perfume - My favorite right now because of the clean and fresh apple scent!
4) Yes to Cucumbers Soothing Eye Gel - This feels really good on hot skin, whether you've been in the sun or you've just taken a cold shower to cool off!
5) Benefit's Eye Bright - I've been grabbing for this a lot recently because of my long hours at work. It's great at brightening up my eyes to make me look well rested when I'm really not!
6) Essie Nail polish in Fiji - I've been loving this pale pink shade because it compliments a tan really well.
7) Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Dark Circle - This roll on concealer is great because it diminishes the appearance of dark circles. I love that it's a thinner formula than most concealers so it's light on my skin and doesn't feel like I'm wearing any concealer, but still gets those dark circles covered!
8) Urban Decay Naked Palette - This is a recent purchase of mine and I've used it every day since I bought it. The neutral colors are great for everyday wear. It's definitely a must for any makeup lover's collection.

DIY Leather Lanyard Keychain

If you attended summer camp as a child like I did, you probably learned how to make what we called 'lanyards'. While we used to use plastic strings in all sorts of bright colors, the same technique can be used to make a much more adult version.

I bought two different types of leather cord, one plain brown and one with a glossy gold finish at my local craft store. You will also need a metal key ring, a pair of scissors and some super glue.

1) Cut two very long pieces of leather, one in each color. I cut mine about 3 feet long and folded them in half so that I would have 4 strands. I then criscrossed the halfway points as shown above.

2) Next I took the bottom strands (gold in my case) and brought them to the opposite side of the brown leather strand, as shown above.

3) Next, I took one brown strand and brought it over first the gold strand and then tucked it under the second gold strand.

4) Lastly, I took the other brown strand and once again brought it over the first gold strand and tucked it under the second gold strand. This completes one layer. Pull it tightly to make everything even.

5) Now just repeat this process over and over again to start building the lanyard.

Here's a view from the other side.

 6) Once the strand is long enough, bend it in half to make the U shape. I then glued three of the strands down and cut off the excess leather. Taking a brown strand, I wrapped it around a few times and then tied it in a knot around a metal key ring. Knot it a few more times so it is nice and secure. Then I cut off the excess leather and super glued the end after tucking it into the knots. Voila! You're all done!

If you found any of these instructions confusing, I've linked a YouTube video here that explains how to start one slightly differently.

To prime or not to prime..

If you're not familiar with many makeup products and techniques, eye primer seems silly or just a scam from makeup companies. However, until you have tried it you honestly don't know what you are missing. Primer gives the shadow a base to stick to, not only does this make your shadow last longer but it makes it more pigmented. This means a $3 eyeshadow used correctly with primer looks like an expensive bright color. Also if you have really oily eyelids a primer is a must so your shadow does move! We personally favor Urban Decay Primer Potion. Both of us delayed purchasing it because of the more expensive price, but after hearing all of the hype we finally caved and have been nothing short of satisfied. Another one of my (Andrea) favorites is the creaseless cream shadows that Benefit Cosmetics sells. They come in several shimmery colors and really help to prevent your shadows from going anywhere. If you are on a budget you can use chap stick or a thin layer of Vaseline however it won't have the quite the same effect. A lot of my friends are afraid to use eyeshadow because they are afraid of it looking bad. My number one recommendation is always to use a primer first. You'll find that the shadows blend better which can make them much more appealing to work with! MAC, Revlon and other companies all make primers, experiment with different brands and find one that works for you.

Olay Pro X Review

I just wanted to do a quick post about one of my favorite new additions to my skin care routine. After years of lusting after Clarisonic's I could never justify spending the money on one so it was a miracle when I found a great replacement for under $30. The Olay Pro X is basically like an electric tooth brush for your face. Just apply your face wash and scrub in a circular with this little gadget for smooth and clear skin. It really gets all the makeup off and the price is great. Its easy to travel with and overall a great purchase. It has tons of great reviews all over youtube, amazon and makeupalley so check them out!

Baking Soda: It's no longer just for your favorite sweet treats.

If you want to have soft and healthy skin, exfoliating is key. It's important to remove the dead skin cells in order to achieve this. However, you don't have to pay for those fancy exfoliators at the store thanks to a tip my mom passed down to me years ago. Just go straight to your kitchen cupboards and grab some baking soda!

Here are 4 ways baking soda can save the day:
1) Your skin feels clogged and dirty.
Mix the baking soda with enough water to make a paste. It should be able to hold it's shape a little bit. Now use this to scrub your face but be careful! I try to keep it away from my eye area and concentrate it on my forehead, nose, chin, and jawline area. Scrub lightly on your cheeks. My favorite time to do this is in the shower. I simply keep a little container of baking soda tightly closed in with my shower products. I also like to do this before I cleanse my face because my face feels extra soft and clean when I do it in this order.
2) You got too much sun and are feeling the aftermath (peeling) of a sunburn.
Mix up the same concoction except use a little less water this time. Scrub your body down in the shower and moisturize very well when you get out and you can say bye bye to gross peeling skin!
3) Your lips are chapped.
Mix baking soda into a small bowl with honey and you've made yourself a completely edible and moisturizing lip scrub.
4) You're in a rush in the morning.
If your cleanser doesn't contain an exfoliator, just add the baking soda to it and you've cut your steps in half!

There are so many benefits to using baking soda in one of the ways above. It's cheaper and chances are you already have it in your house. The best part is that it's gentle on your skin because it can dissolve, unlike those other harsh exfoliators such as ground apricot pits. Yet, it's strong enough to get rid of unwanted dead skin cells.

Hooray for happy and healthy skin!

No matter what workout I'm doing I know that without my music I won't push 110%. For Christmas I asked for an iPod shuffle and it hasn't missed a day at the gym with me since. It's great because it has a built in clip on the back so I can clip it to my sports bra or t shirt and it won't get in the way of whatever I may be doing! Plus at only $49 and tons of pretty colors, how can you resist? Enough with my apple ad...haha
Today we've decided to share with you some of our current favorite songs  to sweat to! Even if you just download them and dance around your room in your underwear, enjoy!
-Andrea

Andrea's Top 10 Current Workout Songs:
1) Party Rock Anthem - LMFAO
2) Super Bass - Nicki Minaj

LALAlinks

It's finally Friday! It's probably been a long week trying to get back into the swing of things after a holiday. A long week normally means a tougher time finding the motivation to get to the gym as well. To help you along we thought we would share with you our fitness and health related links to get you a little more excited to work on taking good care of your body!
First off, we have jog.fm.  I recently have been doing a lot of running and for me, how hard I push myself depends a lot on the music that I am listening to. If the music allows me to run at a good pace, I'm more likely to keep running. If you're a runner, walker, or cycler you must check out this website. All you do is type in your pace for miles or your rotations per minute for cycling and you'll be taken to a customized playlist of songs for your speed. They match up the beats per minute with all kinds of genres of music. So head on over and build a playlist and get out there and be active!
The next is the YouTube channel for Tone It up! Tone It Up is a fitness program started by two women. I personally have never tried it, but I've been hearing a lot of great things about them recently so go ahead and take a look at their website or at least their YouTube channel. They have post great workouts that are simply to use and don't require tons of extra equipment.
Lastly, I've recently become obsessed with the Shape Magazine website. I've always been a fan of reading Shape but to be able to have all the information one click away is fantastic. They have articles on everything from recipes to workouts to style! I definitely urge you to take a look around.

What are some of your favorite websites that are geared towards a healthier lifestyle? Leave us a comment and let us know!

I hope you have a fantastic weekend :)

How to be active in LALAland!

To continue with fitness/health week we have decided to share with you some of our favorite tips on how to lead an active and healthy lifestyle!

Andrea:
I've always been a very active person who eats pretty healthily, but I certainly have my times when all I want is pizza or some other unhealthy food. I try to live by certain rules however, to help me maintain a good lifestyle.
1)Don't eat late at night: I try not to eat anything after 8 pm. We start to slow down at this point in the night so it's not good for digestion to let it sit all night. Now sometimes I can't avoid this because I get home too late from work. In this case I would just eat a very small meal to tide me over until the morning, but I would never stuff myself.
2)Drink a glass of water before every meal. A lot of times, our bodies mix up the signals for thirst and hunger. Many times that you think you are hungry, your body is instead thirsty, you just don't know it. To prevent this from happening, I try to drink a large glass of water 20 minutes before I eat a meal. That way my body gets the water it wants, and I don't overeat.
3)Don't buy junk food. I know it sounds silly, but as a college student it can be really tempting to load up on snacks and junk food. My theory is that if it's not in my apartment I don't have a way to get it, so I won't eat it. Plus that's more money to spend on healthy things, such as fruits and veggies!
4)Drink milk after a workout. Now I know some of you might not be as much of a milk drinker as I am, but my mom got me started on drinking a glass of milk after I'm done working out. It helps to get that protein in right away so your body can build muscle!
5)Just one more. One thing I've been doing really good at is running one extra mile at the end of my workout. It doesn't matter what I may have done for my workout that day, I will always try to push one last mile out of me before I call it quits. For you it doesn't have to be a mile. Maybe it's 50 more crunches or 50 squats. Whatever it may be, try to push yourself just that little bit extra. You'll be really proud of yourself when you're done. I promise!

Lindsey:
So I am not exactly the healthiest person on the planet but I try to stay someone active and healthy. Here are my top five tips...
1) Keep a food journal: You have probably read this 1,000 times in other places but it really does help. You don't even have to count calories. Simply being aware of what you are shoving in your mouth can save you hundreds of calories a day.
2) Water, water, water: Another cliche tip but a good one. I don't go anywhere without my 1 liter water bottle. I swear by lemon water. Just squeeze some fresh lemon juice in and go! It keeps you healthy and helps ward off hunger pains.
3) Go to the gym no matter what: Some days when I really really don't want to go to the gym I will force myself to put the clothes on and at least show up. If I get all the way there and still don't want to work out I will allow myself to go home but 99% I'll get a good work out in. Even if its just 20 minutes its better than nothing.
4) Take home boxes: At restaurants I'll ask for a to-go box right when my food comes and pack half up immediately. Restaurant portions are so huge half of a meal is almost always enough to fill me up and then I have a meal for later or tomorrow!
5) Get active with friends: One of my favorite things to do is go on long walks with friends. The conversation is so good you won't even notice you just clocked 2 miles. Why not try out a new yoga or spinning class (my favorite) with a friend?

Lindsey's Green Smoothie and Protein Shake Recipes

Hello loves! To kick off fitness week on LALAland I wanted to share my two favorite healthy and quick meals for on the go and post workout. You really can't go wrong making smoothies just throw whatever fruit you have into a blender with ice and juice. I recently got into the idea of green smoothies. They have tons of health benefits and can be pretty tasty. I don't like many vegetables so green smoothies are a good way for me to sneak veggies into my diet. My typical green smoothies looks a little like this...

Green Smoothie
handful of baby spinach leaves
frozen strawberries
1/2 banana (I like to freeze mine)
a bit of pineapple
squirt of honey
splash of water or juice of choice

Blend it up and enjoy! Depending on the amount of each fruit you use the smoothie may actually have a green color to it but its delicious and you don't even taste the spinach. The recipe is very flexible. Feel free to swap spinach for kale or frozen strawberries for peaches. Play around and find your own personal combination. Green smoothies are healthy, tasty and easy for on the go.

My next recipe is a post workout shake filled with protein and it tastes like ice cream! What could be better?

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Shake

1 cup of the milk of your choice (I prefer vanilla almond milk)
1 scoop of chocolate protein powder
1/2 frozen banana
1 tablespoon of peanut butter

Blend and enjoy! Sometimes I add ice to make it more frothy but do as you please. Great for after the gym or when you're having a milkshake craving!

Try out these recipes and report back or make up your own recipe to share with other LALAland readers. There are hundreds of recipes online and videos on youtube. Get creative!

Fashion for the Fourth

4th of July
If you've been loving the Nautical trend that's been around for the past two summers, you have no excuse not to dress the part for this holiday weekend. Navy, red and white stripes and bright accessories make it really easy to dress patriotic without having a flag across your chest. Above I've pulled some items using polyvore to put together an outfit similar to what you'll see me in this 4th of July. If you click on the collage, you will be sent to the polyvore page that will tell you where you can find all of these items. Have a fantastic holiday with the people you love!

Fourth of July French Tips!

I wanted to do something in celebration of the holiday weekend so I decided to bring you two ideas on how to do your nails for the 4th! If you're not one for nail designs, I decided to do a brighter, more intense design, but a more subtle one as well.

The nail polishes needed are (from left to right) L'Oreal's Target Red, Milani's Ruby Jewels, OPI's What's with the Cattitude, Nailene's Hard & Healthy French Manicure, and Sally Hansen's Mega Shine top coat. If you don't have these exact colors use whatever you would like! I just decided to go with a solid red, red glitter, baby blue, and white.

The first look is the more adventurous of the two. All over my nails I did one coat of Target Red and one of Ruby Jewels glitter. Then I painted a French tip of baby blue across the top. I know the picture makes it look darker than it really is so look at the picture above since it is more true to color. Next, using a toothpick I dotted in white along the sides of my nails. Don't forget to add a clear top coat and you're nails are ready to go!
This next look is more wearable for those of us who aren't used to wearing crazy designs on our nails. All I did was paint the light blue french tip and then three dots of Ruby Jewels glitter on the sides. After a quick top coat, this design was complete!

I hope give these a try for the weekend and have a happy and safe holiday!

LALAlinks

Today's post is going to be short and sweet! We've decided to just share three of our favorite fashion blogs.

1. www.sidewalkready.com
2. www.selectivepotential.blogspot.com
3. www.cupcakesandcashmere.com

While the Sidewalk Ready and Selective Potential are more 'outfit of the day' type blogs, Cupcakes and Cashmere has additional posts that are beauty and lifestyle related.
Enjoy!
